They say it takes a village to raise a child. The neighbourhoods of the past are what shaped our lives. Together with our families and friends sharing our homes, our stories and our kitchens.
In 1890 Walker Town (later Walkerville) was established by Hiram Walker. Walker created, built and operated the world renowned Canadian Club distillery on the Detroit River - Hiram Walker & Sons. The distillery operates to this day.
Hiram Walker's vision created housing for his employees, as well as churches, schools, a bank, train station and so much more. He created a self-sustaining town that was the envy of all. At Walkerville Eatery we celebrate Hiram's vision and his town of Old Walkerville.
All of our ingredients are locally raised and locally grown. We shop in our neighborhood and partner with our fellow restaurateurs. Our beef is raised further south on Walker road, our wines are from Essex County and our craft beers are all from the immediate area, featuring beers from Walkerville Brewery. Our bread is baked fresh every day and supplied by Blaks bakery in the neighbourhood, another 100 year old business.
The atmosphere of our eatery celebrates Walkerville’s history. You will find photos and archives throughout of past and present Walkerville and of Hiram Walker himself. You will even find several of the original beams from the Hiram Walker Barrelhouse located on Wyandotte street. These beams supported thousands of Barrels of Canadian Club Whisky from 1858 until 2010. Art Students from the historic Walkerville High School bring a touch of today with their artwork within the Eatery.
We hope you will join us for our delicious fresh food and drink as well as a taste of Hiram's History.
